U.S. and Iran exchange fire after a month-long pause

On Sunday, Aug. 30, U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the first publicly confirmed U.S. strike on Iran since July 29. A U.S. official said IRGC personnel were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines. The IRGC called the strike an act of aggression. Overnight into Monday, the IRGC said it fired ballistic missiles at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases in Jordan. Jordan’s armed forces said they intercepted eight missiles at dawn. Iran’s army said it launched drones at Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE. The UAE said it intercepted a drone over territorial waters and denied that the base had been targeted. Qeshm County Governor Hossein Amir-Teymouri told IRNA two people were killed on Larak.

Nepal flood death toll reaches 939; China reports 16 dead in Tibet

On Monday, Nepal’s NDRRMA said 939 bodies had been recovered from the Aug. 26 Bhote Koshi / Trishuli flood, with 3,925 people still out of contact as of 6 p.m. local. RSS said 639 hydropower employees remained unaccounted for. China said the same debris flow killed 16 and left 546 missing at Gyirong Port in Tibet, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries. Nepal began burying unidentified remains after taking DNA samples.

G20 finance ministers open in Asheville

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent opened the G20 finance meeting in Asheville, the first ministerial of the U.S. 2026 host year. He said the world is awash in debt and that governments must grow our way out. He told CNBC he would press counterparts to join Operation Economic Outcast. The EU issued a statement welcoming additional economic pressure, including through that campaign. No joint statement yet. The meeting runs through Sept. 1.

Supreme Court stays injunction on White House East Wing ballroom construction

National Trust for Historic Preservation, No. 26A203, stayed a D.C. district-court preliminary injunction that would have halted above-ground construction of a new East Wing, including a ballroom. The Court did not decide whether the project is legal. It held the government is likely to show the Trust lacks Article III standing. Chief Justice Roberts dissented, joined by Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson, writing that the construction “is likely unlawful.”

EU designates ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the DSA

On Aug. 31, 2026, in Brussels, the European Commission designated ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine and Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms under the Digital Services Act, after the services declared they reach at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU. They have four months, until January 2027, to meet extra VLOP/VLOSE duties, including systemic-risk assessment. The Commission classed ChatGPT as a search engine under the DSA.

GOP committees ask Supreme Court to freeze 4th Circuit ruling on campaign ad rates

On Monday, Aug. 31, the NRCC and NRSC asked the Supreme Court to pause a 4th Circuit decision, issued Aug. 25 in Brown v. FCC, No. 26-1785, that set aside an FCC notice extending lowest-unit-charge broadcast rates to party committees. The statutory window opens Friday, Sept. 4. SCOTUSblog reported the Court directed a response by noon Thursday, Sept. 3. The 4th Circuit majority held the Communications Act gives the discount only to a “legally qualified candidate.”
