On Aug. 31, 2026, the Justice Department said the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York entered judgment revoking the naturalization of Gurmeet Singh. The department said the court’s order is dated Aug. 26. A native of India, Singh entered the United States in February 1992 as a visitor, overstayed, and became a permanent resident in June 2000, the department said. In May 2011, weeks before he applied to naturalize, Singh, then a taxicab driver, raped a passenger after driving her to a location with no witnesses, binding and gagging her and holding a knife to her throat, according to the department. He naturalized on Oct. 19, 2011, concealing those acts, the department said. After naturalizing he was convicted in New York of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Aug. 26 order follows a Justice Department complaint filed Feb. 2. The department did not publish the judgment itself in the release.

A native of India, Singh entered the United States in February 1992 as a visitor for a temporary period not to exceed six months, the department said, then remained without authorization until a family-based immigrant visa petition allowed him to become a permanent resident in June 2000.
In May 2011, weeks before he filed his application to naturalize, Singh, then a taxicab driver, “drove a female passenger who fell asleep during her ride home to a location with no witnesses,” the department said. “When his passenger awoke, she found Singh on top of her with a knife against her throat. He threatened her, bound and gagged her, blindfolded her, removed her clothes, and raped her.” He became a U.S. citizen on Oct. 19, 2011, “concealing these acts throughout his naturalization proceedings,” the department said. After naturalizing he was convicted in New York of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
