G20 finance ministers open in Asheville

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent opened the G20 finance meeting in Asheville, the first ministerial of the U.S. 2026 host year. He said the world is awash in debt and that governments must grow our way out. He told CNBC he would press counterparts to join Operation Economic Outcast. The EU issued a statement welcoming additional economic pressure, including through that campaign. No joint statement yet. The meeting runs through Sept. 1.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent opened the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday, the first ministerial of the United States’ 2026 host year. The Treasury Department scheduled the gathering for Aug. 31–Sept. 1 in a Feb. 19 announcement that also set deputies’ meetings in Asheville on Aug. 29–30.
“The world is awash in debt,” Bessent told reporters before the session, CNBC reported, “and the only way for us to get out of this is to grow our way out of this.” In a CNBC interview the same morning he said he would press counterparts on isolating Iran’s economy. He thanked the European Union “for their very fulsome, fulsome support for Operation Economic Outcast,” the U.S. campaign of secondary pressure on Iran’s financial enablers.
The European Union, in a statement issued in the context of the Asheville meetings, said it “welcomes efforts at ensuring that Iran ceases its destabilising activities and engages in peace negotiations with good faith, also through additional economic pressure, including through the US led Operation Economic Outcast.”
No G20 joint statement had been issued by the time this edition closed. The meeting runs through Sept. 1.
Treasury’s Aug. 5 credentialing notice (sb0594) listed the ministerial as Monday, Aug. 31, through Tuesday, Sept. 1. Bessent told the Associated Press on Sunday he planned to turn up pressure on Iran as part of Operation Economic Outcast.
