Google launches Gemini 3.8 Live dialogue models

Google introduced two live-dialogue models on Sept. 15. Gemini 3.8 Live is built for scale and cost efficiency, with fluid conversation and visual grounding. Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking is built for harder tasks, with more multi-step reasoning while the talk continues. The company says both can run tools in the background while the conversation keeps going, and that 3.8 Live can switch among 97 languages mid-conversation. Rollout started the same day in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Consumer paths include Search Live for 3.8 Live, and Gemini Live plus Workspace Live surfaces for Extended Thinking (with subscription tiers noted on the post). Senate blocks debate on crypto market bill, 49–50

The Senate refused Tuesday to open debate on a House-passed digital-asset bill. On a 49–50 vote at about 2:19 p.m., senators rejected cloture on the motion to proceed to , the . Sixty votes were required. One senator did not vote. The bill does not move to full floor debate on this vote. Senator Thom Tillis then moved to reconsider, leaving open the chance of another try later. Congress.gov’s summary says the would set federal rules for digital commodities and split oversight between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Senate measure title on the roll-call record also notes limits on certain Federal Reserve retail products and on using a central bank digital currency for monetary policy.

Senate clears path to debate college sports bill; floor resumes today

Later Tuesday, the Senate invoked cloture on the motion to proceed to , the , by 74–24. That clears the procedural bar to keep debating whether to take up the bill. The Senate adjourned until 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, and will resume consideration of the motion to proceed post-cloture. Votes are possible. Congress.gov’s CRS summary says the bill sets rules for name, image, or likeness deals for college athletes and gives schools and conferences a limited antitrust exemption to pool and sell certain media rights.

Fed rate decision due this afternoon

The Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee meets for a second day today. The Board’s September calendar lists the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting for Sept. 15–16, with materials tied to 2:00 p.m. Eastern and a Chair press conference at 2:30 p.m. The FOMC calendars page marks the meeting with a star for a Summary of Economic Projections. That is when the Fed could next change rates. As of this morning’s lock, the Fed had not yet posted a new policy statement or Implementation Note for this meeting. Friday’s Consumer Price Index for August remains the last major Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation print before the decision: the all-items index rose 0.4 percent in August after seasonal adjustment and was up 3.4 percent over 12 months. FRED’s seasonally adjusted CPI series still shows August 2026 as the latest observation, at 334.131, updated Sept. 11, with the next release Oct. 14, 2026. No new Bureau of Labor Statistics print overnight before lock.

DOJ charges Russian intelligence network over murder and terror plots

Federal prosecutors unsealed charges Tuesday against five people they say worked for Russian intelligence services. The Justice Department alleges the network paid or tried to pay people in the United States and elsewhere to watch targets and carry out killings, and that it also commissioned attacks on civilian and military infrastructure in European countries seen as helping Ukraine. The indictment, in the Southern District of New York, names Yuri Khrameev, Kirill Khrameev, Oemis Romagoza Durruthy, Yaidel Delgado Suarez, and Angel Eduardo Castro. Prosecutors say the group recently tried to recruit people inside the United States to surveil and murder a U.S.-based Russian dissident, including an offer of about $40,000 to “eliminate” the target. All five face a terrorism-finance conspiracy count that carries up to 20 years; three also face a murder-for-hire conspiracy count that carries up to 10 years. The defendants remain at large. An indictment is an accusation; defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

NASA turns on Roman telescope’s main camera

NASA says the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s main science camera is now on. A Sept. 15 Goddard blog post says the team activated the Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera built to scan large stretches of sky in fine detail. Engineers also ran an early checkout of the Coronagraph Instrument, a system meant to block star glare so faint planets can be seen. The post says the Wide Field Instrument cooled to about minus 225 degrees Fahrenheit before its 18 detectors came online, and that a first test image captured out-of-focus starlight as expected while the optics are still being aligned. Josh Schlieder, the Wide Field Instrument scientist at Goddard, called the in-space activation a huge milestone. NASA says the mission remains on track to release first science images by early 2027 as Roman continues toward the Sun-Earth L2 point.

Rubio announces visa bans tied to South Africa land and discrimination policies

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new visa-restriction policy on Sept. 15. It uses to bar foreign nationals the State Department says are responsible for, or complicit in, laws or policies that enable uncompensated land seizures, race-based discrimination, or incitement of imminent violence against minority groups in South Africa. Certain family members may also be covered. The announcement cites President Trump’s on South Africa. Rubio said the United States remains concerned about discrimination and land-expropriation threats and urged the South African government to address them. The statement does not name specific people who are barred.

NIST finalizes guide to protect online identity tokens

The National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency finalized on Sept. 15. The guide helps agencies and cloud providers protect identity and access tokens from forgery, theft, and misuse. Updates after the December 2025 draft include outcome-based crypto-key guidance and new high-level notes on AI and post-quantum cryptography migration. Ryan Galluzzo of NIST’s digital identity program said anyone using tokens in access management can look to it.
