Fed survey: the economy grew a little since early July

The national summary, prepared at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis from information collected on or before Aug. 24, 2026, said economic activity increased modestly since early July. Ten of twelve Districts reported slight-to-moderate growth. Two reported no change. Manufacturing picked up in most Districts, with some citing defense and data-center-related orders. Residential construction declined while nonresidential construction rose on balance (data centers noted). Employment rose very slightly overall. Prices increased moderately in eight Districts. The outlook was positive but mixed amid higher energy prices, policy, and international conflict. The document is not a commentary on Fed officials’ views.

Clancy jury deadlocked a second time; returns Thursday for a sixth day

The Associated Press reported from Plymouth, Mass., that jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial went home Wednesday, Sept. 2, without a verdict after a fifth day of deliberations and after telling Judge William Sullivan a second time they could not agree whether she is criminally responsible for killing her three children. Sullivan urged them to seriously consider opposing views and reassess their positions if appropriate. The jury was expected to resume Thursday (day 6). Clancy, 36, a former labor-and-delivery nurse, does not deny strangling Cora, Dawson, and Callan (ages 5, 3, and 8 months). The defense argues postpartum psychosis. Hubble tracks a new 10-sided atmospheric wave at Saturn’s south pole

On Sept. 2, 2026, NASA said recent Hubble observations revealed a giant, evolving 10-sided atmospheric wave encircling Saturn’s south pole — the first large regular-sided jet pattern observed in the southern hemisphere. Results published Wednesday in Science Advances. The feature appears similar to the long-lived northern hexagon but is distinct and may be strengthening. Lead author Agustín Sánchez-Lavega (University of the Basque Country); co-authors include Amy Simon (NASA Goddard, OPAL principal investigator) and Michael Wong (UC Berkeley). Justice Department: states in two federal aid programs must report known unlawful presence across all agencies

On Sept. 2, 2026, the Justice Department said the Office of Legal Counsel issued a Sept. 1, 2026, legal opinion clarifying that when a state participates in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Supplemental Security Income, all agencies within that state — not only agencies that administer those benefits — must report individuals known to be not lawfully present to the Department of Homeland Security. The office withdrew a 1998 opinion that had narrowed “State” to administering agencies only. The opinion applies going forward. There are no retroactive penalties for past reliance on the 1998 interpretation. The department says federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families grants exceed $16.4 billion annually. Factories took more new orders in July, Census says

The monthly full report on manufacturers’ shipments, inventories, and orders for July 2026: new orders increased $5.8 billion, or 0.9 percent, to $663.6 billion after a 0.2 percent June decrease. Shipments rose $5.3 billion, or 0.8 percent, to $658.8 billion. Unfilled orders rose $9.9 billion, or 0.6 percent, to $1,600.3 billion. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.81 (from 6.84). Inventories rose $3.5 billion, or 0.4 percent, to $966.9 billion. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.47, unchanged. Chad Barclay pleads guilty to sex trafficking in Brooklyn federal court

On Sept. 2, 2026, the Justice Department said Trinidadian foreign national and lawful permanent resident Chad Barclay, 33, pleaded guilty to sex trafficking and admitted to kidnapping six additional victims. The department says he admitted that on Sept. 13, 2022, he enticed a victim to his residence for commercial sex, then robbed and sexually assaulted her. The plea agreement includes a stipulation to kidnapping six additional women between 2022 and 2023. He faces a minimum of 15 years. Sentence to be determined by the district court. The FBI New York office and the New York Police Department are investigating via the Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force. The Eastern District of New York and the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section are prosecuting.

Raiders name Kirk Cousins Week 1 starter; Mendoza listed as backup
