OpenAI starts billing for GPT-Rosalind, a life-sciences model it released in September
The File desk · Oct 5, 2026, 10:33 AM UTC
Status
Confirmed from OpenAI’s platform changelog (entry dated Sept. 8; billing date Oct. 5, 2026). Not a new model announcement this weekend.
OpenAI’s platform changelog says billing for GPT-Rosalind starts today. The model, listed as gpt-rosalind-research, became generally available on Sept. 8 through a trusted-access program, and only for approved life-sciences research inside that program. The File did not report it then. This is not a new frontier-model launch.
The changelog entry is dated Sept. 8. It says: “GPT-Rosalind ( gpt-rosalind-research ) is now generally available through the trusted-access program for approved internal life sciences research. Standard pricing is $5 per 1M input tokens, $0.50 per 1M cached input tokens, and $25 per 1M output tokens. Billing begins on October 5, 2026.”
No AI lab posted a new frontier model between Sunday morning and this edition. The newest OpenAI changelog entry this desk found, other than this billing date coming due, is Sept. 29, GPT-6.1 Sol. GPT-Rosalind was already on the list. Billing is what starts today.
The File’s editions have no earlier mention of GPT-Rosalind. The Sept. 8 availability note was missed.
What is still unknown or disputed
- Who is inside the trusted-access program. The changelog does not list customers.
- How the model compares with OpenAI’s general models. This entry does not say.
