The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The committee said she has been instrumental in seeing that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted. Pillay grew up under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, and defended Nelson Mandela and others. She later served as a judge at the international tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and as the United Nations' top human rights official.

The announcement is dated Oct. 9, 2026. The committee's dates page set the peace prize for 11:00 a.m. in Oslo, which is 5:00 a.m. Eastern. The summary page lists the prize share as 1/1.

The committee says she served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The committee says she is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide. That line is the committee's. The committee also says international law's institutions are under attack. That is the committee's view.

The pages this desk read do not give her age. No government reactions were opened. Earlier Nobel stories this week covered medicine, physics, and chemistry.
