Fed rate meeting opens tomorrow

The Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee starts a two-day meeting tomorrow. The Board’s Federal Open Market Committee calendars page lists September 15–16, 2026, with a star marking a Summary of Economic Projections meeting. That is when the Fed could next change rates. No new policy statement has printed yet for this meeting. Friday’s Consumer Price Index for August remains the last major Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation print before the decision: the all-items index rose 0.4 percent in August after seasonal adjustment and was up 3.4 percent over 12 months. The next Consumer Price Index release is Oct. 14, 2026. The Bureau of Economic Analysis schedule shows no print today; next major BEA items include Sept. 24 international transactions and Sept. 30 GDP and August personal income.

Senate set for Tuesday cloture vote on crypto market bill

The Senate calendar for Monday says a cloture vote ripens Tuesday afternoon. At 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 15, the cloture motion on the motion to proceed to is scheduled to ripen. The House-passed bill is the . Congress.gov describes it as creating a framework for digital commodities and splitting oversight between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The House passed the bill 294–134. The cloture motion was presented in the Senate on Aug. 8, 2026. Tuesday is when that vote is scheduled to mature — not when the bill becomes law.

OpenAI says Perplexity is using GPT-6 Astra on live systems

OpenAI published a customer story dated Sept. 14. The post says Perplexity uses GPT-6 Astra to write communications, change software, and monitor production systems, and that staff check in less often than with earlier models. Johnny Ho, Perplexity’s cofounder and chief strategy officer, is quoted saying the model can craft communications, edit real-world systems, and monitor production software in ways earlier generations could not. The piece describes asking Astra to build small testing programs that stand in for other services so workflows can be checked end to end. This is a customer/engineering write-up, not a new frontier model launch. Anthropic’s newsroom still led with its Sept. 10 threat report and the Sept. 1 Claude Fable 5.1 / Mythos 5.1 announcement. xAI’s news page showed nothing newer than early September in this window. Landsat 9 shows early fall color across Nunavut tundra

Fall color arrived early in far northern Canada. NASA’s Earth Observatory Image of the Day for Sept. 14 shows reds, yellows, and oranges already sweeping across low shrubs and tundra along the Coppermine River in Nunavut, upriver of Kugluktuk. The paired Landsat 9 images compare July 27, when the same area was still green, with Sept. 6, when autumn color is visible. The Observatory notes that foliage in the region often begins to change in early September and peaks mid-month — among the first places on the continent to turn.

NASA launches fourth balloon of Fort Sumner campaign

NASA flew another science balloon from New Mexico. A Wallops blog post says the Balloon Optimization Opportunity Payload, or BOOP!, launched from Fort Sumner at 8:03 a.m. Mountain time (10:03 a.m. Eastern) on Sept. 13. The flight carried technology instruments for future missions, reached about 123,000 feet, and lasted 4 hours 29 minutes. It was the fourth balloon of the Fort Sumner campaign.

U.S. pledges more than $100 million for Micronesia storm recovery

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau toured Pacific partners after the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau. A Sept. 11 State Department media note says he met Federated States of Micronesia President Wesley Simina and surveyed Typhoon Sinlaku damage in Chuuk State. There he said the United States intends to provide more than $100 million for disaster relief and reconstruction in the Federated States of Micronesia, delivering on commitments. In Solomon Islands he signed an agreement with Foreign Minister Rick Houenipwela for the Peace Corps to return after a 26-year absence, announced Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation support for the Bloody Ridge battlefield, and said State intends to provide four aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles. He also said the Millennium Challenge Corporation will assess rehabilitating the Solomon Islands Parliament. In Kiribati he attended a development partners forum on Kiritimati Island at President Taneti Maamau’s invitation.

White House marks Fort McHenry battle anniversary
