OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra and says it is the first of its models to hit a Critical cyber level

On Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, OpenAI published “GPT-6 Astra: A new generation of intelligence.” It introduced GPT-6 Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model, with claimed state-of-the-art results on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work. The post says Astra is rolling out first to a limited set of organizations and, over coming days, to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, plus the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock. The API model id is gpt-6-astra. Standard pricing is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. OpenAI’s system card says Astra is its first model to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under its . The launch post says the version launching that day will refuse more advanced cybersecurity tasks such as creating proof-of-concept exploits, with less-restrictive defensive access planned through OpenAI Daybreak. Anthropic’s newsroom still led with Sept. 1 Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1. Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash remains Thursday’s File AI item. Supply managers say the services economy grew again in August. Hiring did not.

On Sept. 3, 2026, the Institute for Supply Management said its services index rose to 55.4 in August, up 1.3 points from July’s 54.1. That is a 26th consecutive month of expansion. Business activity rose 2.6 points to 61.7. New orders rose 3.7 points to 60.9. Employment was 47.8, a second straight month of contraction, up 0.4 from 47.4. Prices rose 2.3 points to 72.6, which the group said was the highest since August 2022. Chair Steve Miller cited tariffs and the Middle East conflict as the issues supply managers named most. The next services report, covering September, is due Oct. 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.

July trade gap widens to $88.6 billion as imports rise and exports fall

On Sept. 3, 2026, the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis said the United States bought more than it sold by $88.6 billion in July, up $17.4 billion from a revised $71.2 billion in June. Exports were $310.7 billion, down 2.1 percent. Imports were $399.3 billion, up 2.8 percent. The goods deficit rose $17.6 billion to $119.6 billion. The services surplus edged up $0.2 billion to $31.0 billion. Capital-goods imports rose sharply, led by computers and accessories. The next release is Oct. 6, 2026, covering August.

Fed Governor Waller leans toward holding rates if August inflation keeps cooling

Waller, speaking at a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker interview in Washington, said inflation remains meaningfully above the committee’s 2 percent goal but recent data show signs of cooler inflation. If August data show the improvement was fleeting, a rate increase at the Sept. 15–16 meeting may be appropriate. He said the labor market is in satisfactory shape and he expects more of the same in the August employment report (due Sept. 4). Clancy jury’s foreperson says one juror will not follow reasonable-doubt rules; they return Friday

The Associated Press reported from Plymouth, Mass., that the Lindsay Clancy murder jury went home Thursday, Sept. 3, without a verdict after a sixth day of deliberations. The foreperson’s note said a single juror will not follow the court’s reasonable-doubt instructions. Judge William Sullivan questioned jurors privately, reread those instructions, and declined defense attorney Kevin Reddington’s request to remove the juror. The jury returns Friday for a seventh day. Clancy, 36, does not deny strangling Cora, Dawson, and Callan. The defense argues postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors say she knew what she was doing. No verdict. If jurors cannot agree, the judge could declare a mistrial.

NASA: Pacific had a Category 4 and a Category 5 storm at once. The Atlantic season is quiet.

NASA Earth Observatory’s Image of the Day for Sept. 4, 2026, describes a Sept. 1 picture from the EPIC camera on the DSCOVR satellite. It shows three Pacific tropical cyclones — Lowell, Karina, and Marie — plus Atlantic Tropical Storm Edouard. As of Sept. 3, the Northeast Pacific had 15 named storms and six hurricanes. The Atlantic had five named storms and no hurricanes. Lowell reached Category 5 for several hours Sept. 2 while Karina hit Category 4 — a rare pair of Category 4 and 5 storms at the same time in the area. Atlantic accumulated cyclone energy was 4.4, about 9 percent of normal for the date. Justice Department asks Maryland to stop extra vehicle fees on military families

Seven charged in alleged $57 million tax-refund scheme

On Sept. 3, 2026, the Justice Department said a superseding indictment was unsealed charging Andrea and Kent Shannon of Kuna, Idaho, and five others with and related counts. Prosecutors allege the group filed over 100 fictitious returns or financial instruments and claimed more than $57 million in refunds, with more than $8 million allegedly received from the Internal Revenue Service in 2023–2024. Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the National Fraud Enforcement Division announced the case. An indictment is an allegation. Defendants are presumed innocent. Press release 26-1018.
