OpenAI introduces GPT-6 Astra; marks Critical cybersecurity tier

July goods-and-services deficit widens to $88.6 billion

Fed’s Waller leans toward holding rates if August disinflation continues

Waller, speaking at a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker interview in Washington, said inflation remains meaningfully above the FOMC’s 2 percent goal but recent data show signs of disinflation. If that continues in data due over the next two weeks, he would be inclined to support holding the federal funds target at its current setting; if August data show the improvement was fleeting, a rate increase at the Sept. 15–16 FOMC may be appropriate. Clancy jury’s foreperson flags holdout on reasonable doubt; returns Friday for day 7

Associated Press reported from Plymouth, Mass., that the Lindsay Clancy murder jury went home Thursday, Sept. 3, without a verdict after a sixth deliberation day. The foreperson’s note said a single juror won’t follow the court’s reasonable-doubt instructions. Judge William Sullivan questioned jurors privately, reread reasonable-doubt instructions, and declined defense attorney Kevin Reddington’s request to remove the juror. The jury returns Friday for a seventh day. Clancy, 36, does not deny strangling Cora, Dawson, and Callan; the defense argues postpartum psychosis; prosecutors say she knew what she was doing. No verdict. If jurors cannot agree, the judge could declare a mistrial.

NASA: Pacific hosts rare Category 4 and 5 storms at once; Atlantic ACE near 9% of normal

NASA Earth Observatory’s Image of the Day for Sept. 4, 2026, describes a Sept. 1 DSCOVR/EPIC image of three Pacific tropical cyclones (Lowell, Karina, Marie) plus Atlantic Tropical Storm Edouard. As of Sept. 3, the Northeast Pacific had 15 named storms and six hurricanes; the Atlantic five named storms and no hurricanes. Lowell reached Category 5 for several hours Sept. 2 while Karina hit Category 4 — a rare simultaneous Cat-4/5 pair in the area. Atlantic ACE 4.4 (about 9% of normal for the date); Northeast Pacific ACE 130 (about 50% above normal), per Colorado State University statistics cited by NASA. DOJ urges Maryland to stop nonresident vehicle permit fees on military families

On Sept. 3, 2026, DOJ OPA said the Justice Department issued a letter urging the Maryland Department of Transportation to stop collecting nonresident vehicle permit fees from servicemembers and their spouses that DOJ says violate the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Seven charged in alleged $57 million IRS tax-refund fraud scheme

On Sept. 3, 2026, DOJ said a superseding indictment was unsealed charging Andrea and Kent Shannon of Kuna, Idaho, and five others with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and related counts for allegedly filing over 100 fictitious returns/financial instruments and claiming more than $57 million in refunds, with more than $8 million allegedly received from the IRS (2023–2024).
