Confirmed as announcements. The White House fact sheet and medals release, both dated Oct. 8, 2026, plus NASA releases 26-084 and 26-085. The $6 billion figure and the company pledges are the White House's.
- Confirmed
The White House said the summit represents over $6 billion in investments across government, industry, academia, and philanthropy.
- Confirmed
NASA said it signed a memorandum with the Energy Department on space nuclear power, effective Nov. 1.
At a White House science summit on Thursday, the administration announced what it called more than $6 billion in investments from government, industry, universities, and philanthropy. The White House said eleven companies pledged $2.4 billion in science tools and computing credits for a federal push to use advanced artificial intelligence in research. NVIDIA pledged $1 billion, AMD $500 million, OpenAI $200 million, and Anthropic and Google $150 million each. NASA and the Energy Department also signed an agreement on nuclear power for space. The White House says that includes a reactor-powered spacecraft to Mars expected to launch in 2028.
The fact sheet's own line is “over $6 billion in investments across the Federal Government, industry, academia, and philanthropy.” That number is the White House's. So are the company pledges: NVIDIA $1 billion, AMD $500 million, OpenAI $200 million, $150 million each from Anthropic and Google, $100 million each from AMP and Emerald AI, and $50 million each from AWS, Armada, Crusoe, and Micron. The fact sheet calls the $2.4 billion “SI for science tools and compute credits,” using SI for what it also calls super intelligence. This story says advanced artificial intelligence, and quotes the White House's term only here. How much of the $6 billion is new money, and over what period, is not in the fact sheet. Many items build on earlier announcements. This story does not add those up as new money.
The fact sheet says the National Science Foundation and the Energy Department put over $100 million into instruments and self-running labs that use artificial intelligence. It says Georgia, universities, and industry announced a $1 billion computing investment. It describes a $100 million Genesis Mission Fellowship for accelerated four-year doctorates, a revived Young Scholars Program at the science foundation, and a National Institutes of Health effort called Generation Discovery to recruit 100 early-career scientists. The institutes said separately that 1,648 early-stage investigators received major grants in fiscal 2026, “the most ever recorded.” The Energy Department's Quantum Genesis Q Competition is a $215 million effort toward fault-tolerant quantum computers. The science foundation launched two $33 million prize competitions. An X-Labs Consortium has over $310 million in commitments, the fact sheet says. The White House also cites a $1.8 billion virtual-biology initiative by the institutes, the Energy Department, and Biohub, announced this week. The institutes' Oct. 7 release named no dollar figure, so the $1.8 billion is the White House's number.
NASA release 26-084 says Administrator Jared Isaacman and Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed a memorandum, “ Legal instrument A memorandum between NASA and the Energy Department, not a law. President Trump presented National Medals of Science to Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang, and Lisa Su, and National Medals of Technology and Innovation to Michael Dell and Satya Nadella, the White House said. Anthropic says its $150 million runs over three years and will put its Claude model in more than 15 agencies, including NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. OpenAI's $200 million appears in the White House fact sheet. This desk found no OpenAI post on it.
What is still unknown or disputed
- How much of the $6 billion is new money, and over what period.
- Whether the company credits are cash or in-kind. The fact sheet says tools and compute credits.
- Congressional funding for the Mars reactor.
