  • Confirmed
Four Canadian Armed Forces members died in a fire during live-fire training at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, at about 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) Saturday, Oct. 17, and 39 others were injured (National Defence, Oct. 18).
  • Confirmed
The fire started during the training, and high winds made it grow and spread very quickly, overtaking the unit's administrative area (National Defence, Oct. 18).
  • Confirmed
Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime and said dozens are seriously hurt (Office of the Prime Minister, Oct. 18).
Four Canadian soldiers died Saturday when a fire swept across a training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Canada's Department of National Defence said.1 They were Sgt. Morgan Wong and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark, and another 39 service members were hurt. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime.2
The soldiers, from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, were doing live-fire training in an exercise called Apollo Shooter when a fire started at about 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) Saturday, the department said. High winds made it grow and spread very quickly, and it overran the unit's administrative area.1
The fire spread quickly beyond the edge of the training area as military and civilian crews worked to control it, the department said in its first statement.3 Carney said crews fought it through the night "in some of the worst conditions imaginable," and that air-ambulance crews flew in from Edmonton and Saskatoon.2
The military has not said what started the fire. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, who commands the 1st Canadian Division, said the army is working "to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident."14
Carney said dozens of the injured are seriously wounded, and he ordered flags on all federal buildings lowered to half-mast.2
Why it matters (Estimate). This was a training day, not a battle, and a grass fire pushed by strong wind moved faster than trained soldiers could get clear. What the military finds about how it started and why the unit's area was overrun will shape how live-fire training is run in dry, windy weather. Many of the 39 injured are seriously hurt, so the toll is not yet final.
Sgt. Wong came from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and was serving with the battalion.1
