  • Partially confirmed
Trump posted Sunday morning that he endorses Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election and that any other Israeli leader would be the wrong one.
  • Confirmed
Netanyahu thanked Trump on his own account about two hours later.
President Trump on Sunday publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election and wrote that any other leader would be the wrong one. About two hours later, Netanyahu thanked him. The date of Israel's election is not confirmed here, so it is not printed.1
The letter is on the President's account. At 10:45 a.m. ET, Trump wrote: "If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so." He also wrote: "Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel." He called Netanyahu "a Great Warrior Prime Minister." This pass could not reopen the post.1
Why it matters (Estimate). An American president is openly picking a side in an ally's election and tying that choice to whether the United States itself would carry more of the fight against Iran. That matters to Americans because the United States is already in that conflict. Trump wrote that if Israel has anyone other than Netanyahu, America will have to do this work itself, and he is not inclined to do so. The election date is left out until an official calendar confirms it.
The thanks are on the prime minister's account. Netanyahu posted at 12:50 p.m. ET: "President Trump, my friend Donald - thank you for your extraordinary endorsement. Israel has never had a greater friend in the White House. Together we will never let Iran's regime get nuclear weapons."
