Trudy moves away from Mexico and breaks apart at sea

Added 7:46 a.m. ET, Oct. 19

The File desk · Oct. 19, 2026, 7:46 a.m. ET

Status

Confirmed. The end of the warnings is the U.S. National Hurricane Center's Advisory Number 22, issued at 2 p.m. Mountain time Sunday (5 p.m. ET). The storm's position, strength and outlook are Advisory Number 24 and Forecast Discussion Number 24, issued at 2 a.m. Mountain time Monday (5 a.m. ET). Sunday's story used Advisory Number 20.
  • Confirmed
Mexico's government discontinued all warnings for its coast and the Islas Marías at 5 p.m. ET Sunday as Trudy moved away (Advisory 22).
  • Confirmed
At 5 a.m. ET Monday, Tropical Storm Trudy was about 155 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes with top winds near 60 mph, moving west at 6 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings (Advisory 24).
  • Confirmed
Trudy is expected to become a post-tropical low by tonight and dissipate by Wednesday night. Its swells will keep causing life-threatening surf and rip currents along southwestern and west-central Mexico through Monday (Advisory 24, Discussion 24).
Mexico's Pacific coast is clear of Trudy's winds. The government dropped all its warnings on Sunday afternoon as the storm moved out to sea, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.1 By 5 a.m. ET Monday, Trudy had weakened to a tropical storm with top winds near 60 mph, about 155 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, and forecasters expect it to break down into a leftover low by tonight.2
The warnings came down at 5 p.m. ET Sunday, after Trudy turned away from the coast of mainland Mexico.1 Earlier on Sunday its heavy rain and gusty winds reached parts of southwestern and west-central Mexico, the center said, and the center's advisories do not report a landfall.3
Overnight, dry air and strong winds high in the atmosphere tore the storm apart, and most of its thunderstorms are gone. The center expects Trudy to become post-tropical, a leftover swirl without the engine of a tropical storm, by tonight, and to fade away completely by Wednesday night.24
One danger remains at the beach. Swells from Trudy will keep causing life-threatening surf and rip currents along southwestern and west-central Mexico through Monday, the center said.2
Why it matters (Estimate). For people on Mexico's west coast, the worst is over: no warnings remain, and the storm is dying at sea. The danger left is the surf, which can pull swimmers out even on a calm, sunny day. What the weekend's rain did on land has not yet been counted in anything this desk has read.
This desk has not seen an official damage count from Mexico, and the U.S. center's advisories do not include one.
