Confirmed. The orders, the location, the shelters, the health advice and the injury report are from the City of Toledo's official incident page, last updated 7:30 a.m. ET Wednesday. The detail about the mobile home park and neighborhood inside the evacuation zone is from local TV station WTVG.
  • Confirmed

  • Confirmed
At 4:24 a.m. ET Wednesday, the department ordered everyone within three miles to shelter in place: stay indoors, close windows and doors, and turn off ventilation that draws in outside air.
  • Confirmed
The city says the chemical is an irritant that can burn the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. It has not named it publicly.
  • Confirmed
No injuries or deaths have been reported, and there was no explosion.
Late Tuesday night, people in a north Toledo mobile home park and the neighborhood beside it were told to leave their homes, as a chemical leaked from a tank terminal into a foggy night with almost no wind.12 Toledo Fire & Rescue ordered everyone within a mile of the site to evacuate, and early Wednesday told everyone within three miles to stay inside with windows shut.1 The city says the release is still going on, and no one has been reported hurt.1
The evacuation order came at 10:48 p.m. Tuesday and covers a one-mile circle around the MC Tank Terminal at 1266 Progress Ave. The wider order came at 4:24 a.m. Wednesday. Sheltering in place means staying indoors, closing windows and doors, turning off fans and systems that pull in outside air, and keeping pets inside.1
Evacuees can go to Shoreland Elementary School, a temporary shelter, or to the Meijer parking lot off East Alexis Road, where the Red Cross and city buses are waiting.1
The city has not named the chemical. It says it is an irritant that can burn the eyes, nose, mouth and skin, and that too much exposure can cause headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting. If it gets on you, shower or rinse the area. See a medical professional for mild irritation, and go to an emergency room or call 911 for trouble breathing, vomiting, dizziness or confusion. Health questions can go to the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department at 419-213-4100.1
City officials scheduled a news conference for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.1
Why it matters (Estimate). A three-mile circle in a city is a lot of people, homes and schools, and the order tells them all to stay indoors until officials say otherwise. The city has not said what the chemical is or when the leak will stop. Those two answers will decide how long the orders last.
Dense fog made the night harder. The city warned that no one can tell fog from the chemical by looking, so people should not judge the danger by how the air looks.1

  3. 3.A correction in the record. Overnight, WTVG and WKYC, quoting Toledo Fire & Rescue spokesperson Pvt. Sheldon Collins, placed the leak at a tank at the Sterling Pipe & Tube facility, 1050 Progress Ave., and the city's own page first gave the 1050 address. In its 7:30 a.m. update the city changed the location to 1266 Progress Ave. (MC Tank Terminal). This story follows the city's latest update.
