Status

Partially confirmed. The earthquake is the U.S. Geological Survey's: magnitude 7.0, about 120 miles east-northeast of Nagqu, at 10:33 a.m. ET Thursday, about 11 miles deep. Its PAGER alert is orange for economic losses and yellow for deaths from shaking. The toll is Xinhua's account of local authorities on Friday: 16 killed and 76 injured in Baqen County. China News Service, quoting China's earthquake network, put the depth at 10 kilometers. GDACS posted a red alert. The epicenter is inland. This desk did not find a tsunami bulletin.

Sixteen people were killed, and 76 were hurt, when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County, in Nagqu, in northern Tibet, at 10:33 on Thursday night local time. That was 10:33 a.m. Eastern. Local authorities gave the count on Friday. Xinhua, China's state news agency, reported it.12
The U.S. Geological Survey put the epicenter about 120 miles east-northeast of Nagqu, and about 11 miles underground. China's earthquake network, in a formal reading carried by China News Service, put the depth at 10 kilometers, about 6 miles, and the distance from Nagqu city at about 120 miles. The two agencies agree on the neighborhood. They do not agree on the depth.23
The survey's PAGER alert is a rapid damage model, not a death count. It is orange for money and yellow for lives. Orange means significant damage is likely, the disaster could be widespread, and past alerts at that level have needed a regional or national response. The model put the economic loss under 1 percent of China's economy. Yellow means some deaths are possible. The survey also said the vulnerable buildings in the region are mostly adobe block and unreinforced brick held together with mud.4
GDACS, a United Nations and European alert desk, posted a red earthquake alert for the same shock. It said a quake of this size, in this place, can have a high humanitarian impact, and it estimated that about 10,000 people were in the zone of very strong shaking.5
The ground is high and the towns are far apart. China News Service said the land within about 6 miles of the epicenter averages about 15,700 feet, and that few people live there. It said the China Earthquake Administration started a Level II emergency response. China's emergency ministry, in its own notice, said the quake caused major casualties and told crews to search every village and to verify the count of the dead and the injured. It ordered faster repairs to power, phone lines, and roads, and it raised the national disaster-relief response to Level III. That is a different order from the earthquake administration's Level II. This desk does not have the rule that defines either level.36
The injury count has already moved. CGTN, citing Nagqu's emergency management bureau, reported 46 people injured and said 339 houses had collapsed or been damaged. Xinhua's later figure is 76 injured. That later dispatch did not repeat the house number. The ministry's order to count again means the toll can still change.71
Why it matters (Estimate). A magnitude 7 quake is strong enough to bring down the weak brick and adobe the U.S. survey says are common there, and help has a long way to travel on a high plateau.4 (Estimate — our reading.) The epicenter is inland, on the plateau, so this is not an ocean tsunami.2 For anyone outside that county, the harm on the record is the count local authorities gave, and that count is still being checked.16
The emergency ministry said it is sending 5,000 more cotton tents, coats, and folding beds, and that people who have been moved need a hot meal, clean water, clothes, and a warm place to sleep.6

"Sixteen people were killed and 76 others injured after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqen County of Nagqu City in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region at 10:33 p.m. Thursday, local authorities said on Friday." Xizang is the name on the Chinese release. This story uses Tibet as the everyday name. This desk did not open a county document. The toll is Xinhua's account of local authorities.

Coordinates 32.3805 north, 93.7797 east. The event feed includes a tsunami field set to 0. This desk is not treating that field as a tsunami forecast, and it did not find a separate tsunami bulletin. 191 kilometers is about 120 miles. 18 kilometers is about 11 miles.

It says the service was told by the China Earthquake Administration that a Level II emergency response was started. It quotes a formal determination by the China Earthquake Networks Center: 10:33 p.m. Beijing time on Oct. 22, Baqen County, Nagqu, magnitude 7.0, depth 10 kilometers, average elevation about 4,800 meters within 10 kilometers of the epicenter, and a sparsely populated area. Distances in that story: 59 kilometers from the Baqen county seat, about 37 miles, and 399 kilometers from Lhasa, about 250 miles. 194 kilometers from Nagqu city. This desk did not open the earthquake network's own page. Partially confirmed.

Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread. Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of GDP of China. Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response." "Yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities. Some casualties are possible." "The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction." The fatality alert level is yellow. The economic alert level is orange. The event feed's overall alert field is orange. In the fatality model, the largest single bin was 10 to 100 deaths, at about a 37 percent chance. That is a model range, not a count. A magnitude 7.0 quake in Baqen County, Nagqu, at about 10:33 p.m. on Oct. 22 "造成重大人员伤亡," caused major casualties. The notice does not give a death or injury number. It tells crews to finish the first search, then check every village, household, and person, and to verify the casualty count. It says the area is high and aftershocks are frequent. It orders faster restoration of power, communications, and transport. It says the national natural-disaster relief response was raised to Level III. It says 5,000 more central relief items, cotton tents, cotton coats, and folding beds, plus 43,000 items coordinated from charities, including toilets, heaters, food, and fuel. It says displaced people should have a hot meal, clean water, clothes, medical care, and a safe warm place to stay.
  7. 7.CGTN, "16 killed after M7.0 quake hits China's Xizang, rescue efforts underway," updated 10:52, Oct. 23, 2026. https://news.cgtn.com/news/2026-10-23/news-1RsWPFMFpy8/p.html "Sixteen people were killed and 46 others injured ... according to the city's emergency management bureau." "The tremor has led to the collapse or damage of 339 houses, and 20 livestock sheds have been affected." "The China Earthquake Administration has initiated a Level-II emergency response." "Xizang has activated a Level-III earthquake disaster emergency response, according to the regional emergency command center." This is earlier than the Xinhua brief that says 76 injured. This desk did not find the steps 32 and 65, or a line that said at least 339 homes collapsed. The house wording used here is CGTN's: collapse or damage of 339 houses. CGTN is a state broadcaster. Partially confirmed.

What is still unknown or disputed

  • Whether 76 is still the number of injured. Xinhua's dispatch is the latest count this desk could verify, and the emergency ministry told officials to check it again.
  • How many houses are down. CGTN's 339 is an earlier report of houses collapsed or damaged. The later Xinhua brief did not repeat it.
  • Which depth is right. The U.S. survey says 18 kilometers. China's network says 10.
  • How many places are without power or phone service. The emergency ministry ordered those repairs. It did not publish an outage count.
  • A tsunami bulletin. This desk did not find one. The epicenter is inland, on the Tibetan plateau.
