Texas executed Jamaal Howard, 46, on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The prison system's list numbers him 603. Prison records say that on May 12, 2000, Howard robbed a convenience store in Silsbee, in Hardin County, and shot the 42-year-old clerk once in the chest, killing her. He took $114. The U.S. Supreme Court turned down last-day requests to stop the execution. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said she would have granted one. This story is a day late. The prison pages checked for Thursday's edition were dead links.
The execution happened Oct. 7. It was not in Thursday's edition because the Texas Department of Criminal Justice addresses this desk tried that morning returned 404. The working pages, found Friday, are executed_inmates.html and scheduled_executions.html. The executed list, read as a table row, says: 603, Howard, Jamaal, 999383, 46, 10/07/2026, Black, Hardin. This story says No. 603 on the state's list. It does not say that number is a count of executions since 1982. The page header was not parsed that way.
His inmate page says: “On 5/12/2000, Howard robbed a convenience store in Silsbee. During the robbery, Howard shot a 42 year old white female clerk one time in the chest, causing her death. Howard took $114 from the cash register during the robbery.” The page does not give the clerk's name.
The Supreme Court's miscellaneous orders of Oct. 7 include the line “Justice Jackson would grant the application for stay of execution.” The time of death, his last statement, and the legal issues in the appeals were not opened.
What is still unknown or disputed
