Status
Partially confirmed from the State Department's public posts on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. The travel advisory page returned an error when this desk's sweep opened it, so the posts are the record. They are the department's account.
- ConfirmedThe department's spokesperson account said State issued an ordered departure for non-emergency employees and their families in Saudi Arabia.
- ConfirmedThe travel account said operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh remain suspended.
The State Department said Wednesday that it ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families to leave Saudi Arabia. The department's travel account said operations at the main airport in Riyadh remain suspended. The formal travel page was not opened.12
At 3:24 p.m. Eastern, the spokesperson's account wrote: “The U.S. Department of State issued an ordered departure for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia only.” It said that Iranian-supported Houthis “have increasingly engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports.” That is the department's post.1
At 2:31 p.m. Eastern, the travel account wrote: “Operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh remain suspended.” Anonymous reports about troop movements are not used.2
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. An ordered departure means the government wants its own non-emergency staff and their families out. Americans who are not on the government payroll still have to decide for themselves. The formal advisory page was not retrieved, so this story stops at the two posts.
The airport named in the travel post is King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
