Status
Confirmed as the State Department’s readout of Secretary Marco Rubio’s Oct. 14, 2026 call with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. An Ethiopian or Eritrean government statement was not opened. The readout is not a treaty.
The State Department said Secretary Marco Rubio spoke on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed about heightened tensions with Eritrea. The readout says Rubio pressed for de-escalation, a return to the 2018 Ethiopia-Eritrea peace framework, respect for sovereignty, and no cross-border incursions. This is the department’s account of the call. It is not a new U.S. statute, and no Ethiopian or Eritrean statement was opened.
The readout is dated Oct. 14, 2026. It does not say the two governments agreed to a next step. It does not quote Abiy.
Secretary Rubio’s travel to Samarkand, Mumbai, and Jamnagar, set for Oct. 17–22, and Nicaragua’s Oct. 13 refusal of agrément for a U.S. nominee, are on the politics calendar. They are dated Oct. 13. Wednesday’s State Department index returned 404, so they were not in that paper. They are not separate stories today.
No White House presidential action dated Oct. 14 or Oct. 15 was on the actions page this morning. The newest actions there remain Oct. 7.
What is still unknown or disputed
- Abiy’s account of the call. An Ethiopian government statement was not opened.
- An Eritrean government statement. None was opened.
- Whether any de-escalation step was agreed. The readout does not say one was.
