Status

Confirmed. The stay-home order and its end are posts on the official X accounts of the Valencia regional government (@generalitat) and its 112 emergency service (@GVA112), translated from Valencian by this desk. The death toll and the rescue count are posts by Pilar Bernabé, the Spanish government's delegate in the Valencia region. Details of who died, and the three towns still flooded Monday night, are Partially confirmed: they come from local news outlets quoting Bernabé. A fourth death reported elsewhere in Spain is not confirmed by this desk.
  • Confirmed
The Valencia regional government ordered people in 145 towns on the southern coast of Valencia province and the northern coast of Alicante province to stay home on Monday, Oct. 19, as torrential rain from a storm Spain named DANA Adam flooded rivers (Generalitat and 112 Comunitat Valenciana, Oct. 19).
  • Confirmed
Three people died in the Valencia region, and the Guardia Civil, the army's emergency unit (UME) and national police rescued more than 450 people, the government delegate said Monday (Pilar Bernabé, Oct. 19).
  • Confirmed
The stay-home order was lifted for most towns by midday Monday and for the last eight, including Oliva and Xàbia, by Monday afternoon (112 Comunitat Valenciana, 2:21 p.m. ET).
  • Partially confirmed
The dead were a 79-year-old woman with limited mobility found in her home in Oliva, a 64-year-old man at a campground in Oliva who suffered cardiac arrest, and a woman who went into the rough sea at Sagunto beach on Sunday (Interdiario, quoting Bernabé).
  • Partially confirmed
On Monday night, people in three towns, Piles, Miramar and Bellreguard, still could not leave their homes normally, and only heavy vehicles could get in (Cadena SER, quoting Bernabé).
A 79-year-old woman who could not easily move was found dead in her home in Oliva, on Spain's Mediterranean coast, on Monday, the Spanish government's delegate in the region said.3 She was one of three people killed in the Valencia region as a slow-moving storm poured torrential rain on the coast.2 The regional government ordered people in 145 towns to stay home while soldiers, police and the Guardia Civil pulled people out of flooded houses.1
Rescuers reached more than 450 people on Monday, said Pilar Bernabé, the delegate.2 Army emergency teams used helicopters and heavy trucks to reach people stranded on rooftops, on terraces and in their homes, Spain's Defense Ministry said.9 The eight towns kept under the order longest were all in the Safor and Marina Alta districts, between Gandia and Dénia.1
The other two who died were a 64-year-old man who suffered cardiac arrest at a campground in Oliva, and a woman who went into the storm-whipped sea at Sagunto beach on Sunday, Bernabé said, according to a local news report.3
The regional government lifted the stay-home order for most towns by midday Monday, and for the last eight, including Oliva and Xàbia, that afternoon.1 But in Piles, Miramar and Bellreguard, people still could not get out of their homes normally on Monday night, Bernabé told Cadena SER radio.4
The rain has moved on. On Tuesday morning the regional emergency service ended its last river flood alerts for the area, and Spain's weather agency forecast mostly sunny, dry weather from Thursday through Saturday.15 Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the emergency command post in Oliva on Tuesday morning.6
Why it matters (Estimate). This is the same stretch of Spain where floods killed more than 200 people two years ago.7 This time, phone alerts went out from Sunday evening, and on Monday 145 towns were told to stay home while rescuers worked. Three people still died, and the damage to homes, roads and farms has not been counted. The rain is over, but in a few towns people are still waiting for the water to go down.
In Oliva on Monday night, the regional forest firefighters flew drones over cut-off streets as loudspeakers, telling people where to find supplies.8

Partially confirmed: this desk did not find these details on an official page. The article lists two deaths in Oliva and adds the Sagunto death of the day before, which matches Bernabé's later count of three.

  7. 7.Background and caveats. The 2024 toll is as reported by Al Jazeera (more than 230 dead in the Valencia region), Oct. 20, 2026: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/20/four-dead-as-torrential-rain-batters-eastern-spain . Al Jazeera reports a fourth death from this storm in Catalonia; La Vanguardia reports a fourth in Andalusia; this desk has not confirmed either. Rain totals: a volunteer weather network, AVAMET, reported more than 700 liters per square meter (about 28 inches) at some stations (as reported by El País); Spain's weather agency had warned that 300 to 400 liters per square meter could fall locally. These are not official measured totals, so the story does not use them. El País put the population of the 145 towns at about 900,000; this desk did not see that figure from an official source.

What is still unknown or disputed

  • How much damage the floods did. This desk found no official count of damaged homes, roads or farms.
  • Whether a fourth death elsewhere in Spain is linked to the storm. News reports differ on where it happened, and this desk has not seen an official confirmation.
