Supreme Court keeps Missouri on its 2022 House map for the 2026 election

On Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, the Supreme Court granted a stay so Missouri must keep using its 2022 U.S. House map for the 2026 election, not the 2025 map. The Court blocked lower-court orders that would have required the 2025 map. The Court’s unsigned opinion said Missouri state law keeps the 2025 map from taking effect until voters approve it in a referendum, and that changing maps mid-election would cause chaos.
On Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, the Supreme Court granted a stay in People Not Politicians v. Onder, docket 26A388.
The order says lower courts should not block use of the 2022 map in Missouri’s 2026 congressional election, and should not require the state to use the 2025 map.
The Court’s unsigned opinion said that, as a matter of state law, the 2022 map — not the 2025 map — must be used in that election.
The opinion said Missouri law keeps the 2025 map from taking effect until voters approve it in a referendum.
It also said that changing maps in the middle of an election would cause chaos.
