Confirmed from the Justice Department release of Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco was sentenced to 30 years after a guilty plea. The deaths are from the release's account of the June 2022 trailer.
- ConfirmedA federal judge sentenced Miranda-Orozco, 39, to 30 years for his role in the 2022 smuggling case in which 53 people died.
- ConfirmedHe pleaded guilty July 2. Two of the people he arranged to move died, the department says.
A Guatemalan man was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in federal prison for helping move people who were packed into a tractor-trailer in San Antonio in June 2022. The Justice Department says 53 people died in that heat, and two of them were clients he had arranged to move.1
The man is Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, 39. The release says the trailer was loaded with 64 people and traveled about 156 miles from Laredo to San Antonio in 90-degree heat without working air conditioning. First responders pronounced 48 people dead at the scene. Five more died at the hospital. Among the dead were six juveniles and at least one pregnant woman. Another of his clients was badly hurt and survived a long hospital stay.1
He was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024, extradited in March 2025, and pleaded guilty on July 2 to conspiracy and to aiding and abetting bringing a person into the United States resulting in death, and resulting in serious bodily injury. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons said 21 of the people who died were from Guatemala. The release spells his name “Mirando-Orozco” once inside that quote. The name used here is the spelling in the rest of the release, Miranda-Orozco.1
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. Fifty-three deaths make this one of the deadliest smuggling cases on record. That ranking is this desk's reading. The release does not say it. Charges in related cases, if any remain, are not described here.1 The sentence is a case against someone who organized the trip from abroad, not only against a driver.
The release does not name the sentencing judge. It includes a government photograph described as claw marks inside the trailer. This story does not reprint that picture.
