Witkoff and Kushner sat with Putin. Strikes on Kyiv paused.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner sat with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Saturday, Sept. 5.

The Kremlin posted the meeting at 19:50 under the title “Meeting with US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.” It said Putin received “Special Envoy of the President of the United States of America Steve Witkoff and entrepreneur, founder of Affinity Partners Jared Kushner.”

Putin asked them to take “best wishes and words of gratitude to the President of the United States, Mr Trump,” who “does not stop his efforts” on the “Russian‑Ukrainian conflict.”

Then he talked about Kyiv. “We received this request through official channels – both through the intelligence services and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – to stop the strikes on Kiev. I issued the respective order, and since midnight on September 5, these strikes on Kiev have not been carried out.”

He said Ukraine had “significantly reduced – by an order of magnitude – the strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including Moscow.” He added: “The Ukrainian authorities have published their call for a broader three‑day truce, but we have never agreed on this with them.”

Yury Ushakov, a Kremlin aide, told TASS on Sept. 6: “The meeting lasted more than three hours, or more precisely, 3 hours and 10 minutes. It was substantive, constructive, extremely frank and trusting.”

A White House official told Agence France-Presse the two men had come to “advance President Trump’s agenda of peace in the Russia-Ukraine War.” The official said: “The two sides discussed substantive plans for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and look forward to equally productive meetings tomorrow in Ukraine.” AFP said the envoys then headed to Kyiv.
