A United Nations situation report on Sunday afternoon raised the damage count from Friday's earthquake in central Panama. Panama's National Civil Protection System reported more than 820 damaged homes, 27 minor injuries, and 29 affected health facilities. The Ministry of Education reports 419 affected schools. No one has been reported missing, and the new report does not list a death toll. Classes at public and private schools are cancelled nationwide on Monday.

The report is Situation Report No. 02 from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as of 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 11. It quotes Panama's National Civil Protection System, the Ministry of Education, and the University of Panama's Institute of Geosciences.

The institute has revised the Oct. 9 earthquake to magnitude 7.6. It places the epicenter 39 kilometers northwest of Tonosí, at a depth of 4 kilometers, and says it has recorded more than 200 earthquakes since, five of them magnitude 6.0 or larger. The U.S. Geological Survey still lists the mainshock as magnitude 7.7, about 12 kilometers west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba. Both figures are the agencies' own.

Civil protection's count, as of 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, is more than 820 damaged homes, 27 people with minor injuries, and 29 affected health facilities, in ten provinces and two Indigenous territories. The Ministry of Education reports 419 affected schools. The report says no one has been reported missing. It does not list a death toll. Sunday's story, from earlier civil-protection accounts, was that no one had been killed.

At least 255 people were in two shelters in Mariato, in Veraguas, and 12 were in one shelter in Penonomé, in Coclé. Two more shelters were open in Boca de Quema, in Los Santos. The report does not say how many people were in those two. About 300 people were evacuated from Isla de Cañas.

Tonosí has no water or electricity. The road from Pedasí to Tonosí remains closed. The Ministry of Public Works has shut the bridge over the Oria River, so only light vehicles can reach the town, by way of Macaracas and Llano de Piedra. Six communities in Los Santos and Herrera are still cut off.

The Ministry of Education has cancelled classes at all public and private schools on Monday, Oct. 12.

Sunday's story used earlier tallies, including more than 426 damaged homes and a later evening count of at least 600. Those counts are what news organizations quoted at the time. This story uses the United Nations figures above.
