What the models do, and how the checks work, is the company's description. The article page was not opened.
OpenAI's safety card for ChatGPT Images 2.6, published November 4, 2026, says the release adds GIF creation and photo markup in ChatGPT and in the company's API. A GIF here means a short looping picture. The card is the company's account of its own checks.1
The card names two models, Sunburst and Flare. It says Flare is built for faster generation, and that people can set how much reasoning the model uses, which changes how fast it generates and edits.1
The card says the safety stack is the one used for ChatGPT Images 2.5, with added safeguards for GIFs. Before a picture is made, a check can refuse the request. Afterward, a check can block the picture if the company says it breaks the rules.1
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. People who make pictures in ChatGPT are being offered a faster model and short animations. The card describes OpenAI's own checks. It is not an outside audit, and the product article did not load.
OpenAI's news feed, timestamped 00:00 GMT on November 4, 2026, which is 7:00 p.m. ET on November 3, says Images 2.6 brings faster image generation, GIF creation, more precise editing, and new API controls. The article page returned 403.2

Notes

  1. 1.OpenAI Deployment Safety Hub, "ChatGPT Images 2.6 System Card," published November 4, 2026. "The updated Sunburst and Flare models improve editing consistency, detail preservation, and responses to sketches and image annotations. Flare is optimized for faster generation, while configurable reasoning effort gives users in Chat via the model picker or developers in the API more control over generation and editing speed. This release also adds GIF generation and photo markup in both ChatGPT and the API, plus SVG output support in the API." "The core safety stack we are using with ChatGPT Images 2.6 is based on the same safety foundations of ChatGPT Images 2.5, with additional safeguards for GIF creation." Upstream checks can refuse a request before generation. Downstream checks analyze the generated image before it is shown.
