OpenAI said Wednesday that, among ChatGPT Enterprise customers in its European Union sample, Codex and ChatGPT Work account for more than half of output tokens. Since May 2026, it said, weekly active users of those tools at EU businesses with 200 or fewer associated users grew more than eightfold. The share of output tokens from those tools ranged from 22 percent in Slovenia to 85 percent in Lithuania. All of those figures are OpenAI’s.
The post is dated Oct. 14, 2026. A token here is a small chunk of text the model writes. Output tokens are the chunks the model produces.
OpenAI defines a frontier firm as one in the top 10 percent by output tokens per active user. The comparison uses ChatGPT Enterprise and Business customers only. In September, it said, EU frontier firms generated more than four times as many output tokens per active user as typical EU firms. Frontier firms outside the EU generated more than twice as many as EU frontier firms. EU-based firms were 10 percent of frontier firms globally, it said.
The post includes a comment from Sarah Friar. That sentence is hers. This story does not quote it.
Nothing in this account was audited outside the company. The sample is OpenAI’s customers, not every European firm.
What is still unknown or disputed
- The underlying customer file. It was not opened. Every percentage is OpenAI’s.
- Whether “typical EU firms” in the comparison are the rest of the same customer sample. The post’s definition of frontier firms is the top 10 percent of ChatGPT Enterprise and Business customers.
- Sarah Friar’s comment. It was not quoted.
