OpenAI plans picture ads inside ChatGPT’s image tool

The File desk · Oct 6, 2026, 10:41 AM UTC

Status

Confirmed as OpenAI’s own announcement, dated Oct. 5, 2026. The weekly audience figure is the company’s. Yesterday’s edition did not carry the post.

Editor’s note: OpenAI posted this on Oct. 5, before yesterday’s edition locked, and that edition did not carry it. The company said it will test a new picture ad in ChatGPT. The ads show during image generation, labeled, and kept separate from the picture being made. Tests start later this month in the United States with a first group of advertisers. OpenAI says ads do not change ChatGPT’s answers.

The post also says OpenAI added tools that let advertisers measure results, and that it is trying outside brand-safety checks with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.

OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. That number is the company’s. This story leaves out the advertiser results quoted on the post. Those are the advertisers’ claims.

Initially, we’ll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created.
