- 4.Reuters, "Nigeria reports first Ebola case in a decade in woman who arrived from Uganda," Oct. 21, 2026, as republished by CNBC Africa: https://www.cnbcafrica.com/2026/nigeria-confirms-ebola-case-in-patient-who-arrived-from-uganda . Partially confirmed: this desk did not see Uganda's travel detail, the Oct. 5 arrival date, or the flight tracing on an official page. Reuters quotes Odianosen Ehiakhamen, an assistant director at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking to Arise TV.
- 5.Kenya Ministry of Health, posts on its official X account, Oct. 20, 2026: https://x.com/MOH_Kenya/status/2112562389614723282 and https://x.com/MOH_Kenya/status/2112575539986968838 . The detail that the ninth case is a close family member of the first case comes from Kenyan outlets the ministry reposted (The Standard and Kenyans.co.ke).
- 6.Institut National de Santé Publique (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Situation Report No. 158 on the Ebola outbreak, report date Oct. 19, 2026, published Oct. 20; translated from French by this desk: https://insp.cd/sitrep-n158-mve-bdbv-19-10-2026/ (PDF: https://insp.cd/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/SitRep_MVEBDB_158_19_10_2026.pdf). Monday's 85 cases: Ituri 43, North Kivu 33, Haut-Uélé 6, Tshopo 2, Nord-Ubangi 1. Ituri has 72.7% of all confirmed cases. 66 of 178 health zones in eight provinces have been affected.
- 7.Notes. As of about 7:25 a.m. ET Wednesday, the U.S. CDC's travel notices page listed no notice for Nigeria; its Ebola notices still cover Congo, Uganda and Kenya (https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices). WHO's Disease Outbreak News page had no new Ebola item since Oct. 8. The three-week figure in "Why it matters" is the commonly cited 21-day maximum incubation period for Ebola, which is why contacts are watched for 21 days.
What is still unknown or disputed
- Where the woman was infected. Nigeria and WHO say investigations are ongoing.
- Whether any of her 44 contacts are sick. Officials have not reported any.
- Her exact arrival date. WHO's timeline implies Oct. 3; a Nigerian official told a TV station Oct. 5.
