NASA says Roman telescope now has fuel for at least 22 years

NASA says accurate flying has more than doubled the potential working life of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. A Sept. 14 Goddard blog post says the first mid-course correction on Aug. 31 used less than 10 percent of the fuel budgeted for that burn — about 40 pounds instead of 441 — and was more than 99 percent accurate. Extra fuel loaded at launch, because the spacecraft flew lighter than the conservative weight used for planning, adds more years. Jamie Dunn, director of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said Roman has fuel for at least 22 years of potential science operations. The design life had been a five-year primary mission plus a five-year extension. A second burn is planned later this month before the observatory settles into orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point about 100 days after launch.
