Kenya confirms an eighth Ebola case in a 49-year-old man

Added 7:46 a.m. ET, Oct. 19

The File desk · Oct. 19, 2026, 7:46 a.m. ET

Status

Confirmed. The eighth case is the Kenya Ministry of Health's Ebola Response Update of Oct. 18 and its posts quoting Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth. The four cases before it are the ministry's press release of Oct. 17. Both were read on the ministry's official X account, and its website did not yet list them when this desk checked. Africa CDC repeated the Oct. 17 figures. Congo's figures are the Congolese public health institute's situation report No. 155.
  • Confirmed
Kenya confirmed an eighth case of Bundibugyo Ebola on Sunday, Oct. 18: a 49-year-old man who is not a health worker. He had fever, headache and muscle pain (Ministry of Health, Oct. 18).
  • Confirmed
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the ministry confirmed four cases: three health workers who cared for the first patient in the hospital, and a male relative of that patient. All four were already in quarantine when they fell ill, which brought Kenya's total to seven, including one death (Ministry of Health press release, Oct. 17).
  • Confirmed
The ministry says there is no evidence of community spread and the risk to the general public remains low. On Oct. 17, 128 of 130 known contacts were in quarantine (press release, Oct. 17, and Africa CDC, Oct. 17).
  • Confirmed
In Congo, the outbreak reached an eighth province, Nord-Ubangi, on the border with the Central African Republic, with two confirmed cases, one of them fatal (Congo situation report No. 155, data through Oct. 16).
Kenya's Ebola count has reached eight. Kenya's Ministry of Health confirmed the newest case on Sunday: a 49-year-old man who is not a health worker.1 The ministry has not said whether he was in quarantine. A day earlier it had confirmed four cases, three of them health workers who cared for the country's first patient, and those four were already in quarantine when they got sick.2 The ministry says there is no sign the virus is spreading in the community, and that the risk to the public remains low.
The new patient had fever, headache and muscle pain, the ministry said, and he was the only one of 38 people tested on Sunday who came back positive. Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth announced the case.1 The ministry has not said whether he was in quarantine, how he was exposed, or where he is being treated.5
Saturday's four new patients were a close male relative of the first patient, in quarantine since Oct. 6, and three health workers, two men and a woman, who treated the first patient in the hospital on Oct. 3 and 4. All four had a fever first, were isolated right away, and tested positive at two laboratories.2
That made seven cases, including one death: the first patient. The ministry says the second and third patients are stable.2
The ministry says the risk to the general public remains low, because there is no evidence of community spread. On Saturday it said 128 of the 130 known contacts were in quarantine, and teams were still looking for the last two. It warned that more cases among people in quarantine are possible until their 21-day watch ends.2 Africa CDC, the African Union's public health agency, repeated those figures and praised Kenya's contact tracing.3
Kenya says it remains open for business, with no limits on travel, trade or public gatherings.2
In Congo, where this outbreak began in May, the virus has reached an eighth province. Nord-Ubangi, on the border with the Central African Republic, reported two confirmed cases in the Wapinda health zone, one of them fatal, and both patients are men in their twenties. Congo's latest situation report counts 9,415 confirmed cases and 4,536 deaths since the start, with data through Oct. 16, and Ituri province is still the center of the outbreak.45
Why it matters (Estimate). Until Sunday, every Kenyan case after the first had been found in someone already being watched in quarantine. That is how health officials catch new infections before they can spread. The ministry has not said whether the eighth patient was in quarantine. If he was not, health workers will need to trace a new circle of contacts, and that is the thing to watch this week. In Congo, the jump to a new border province makes an already huge outbreak harder to contain.
In Kenya, the ministry's free line for questions and symptoms is 719.2

  5. 5.Caveats. Some news reports describe the eighth patient as a hospital patient attendant; the ministry's own update says only that he is "not a healthcare worker," and this story uses the ministry's words. The Congo report's highlights box dates the new province to "16 septembre"; its summary and tables say Oct. 16, which this story uses.
