Jihoon Park told people in his community he would grow their savings.

A federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, found him guilty on Sept. 8. Park is 52 and from Chantilly, Virginia.

Prosecutors said he used personal relationships and a former tie to a large national financial institution to win trust. He promised safe investments with high returns. Instead, the department said, he transferred more than $2.5 million from victims to himself and used the money to buy a house and cryptocurrency.

When a victim sued him, the department said, he moved assets to his wife, hid millions of dollars in cryptocurrency, filed for bankruptcy, and falsely claimed he had only $0.34 in financial assets and no cryptocurrency.

The jury convicted him of three counts of wire fraud and two counts of bankruptcy fraud. Sentencing is set for Dec. 10, 2026. He faces a maximum of 20 years on each wire-fraud count and five years on each bankruptcy-fraud count. A judge will set the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The FBI Washington Field Office is investigating. Press release 26-1029. Restitution amounts are not in the release.
