Confirmed from Google's ads blog, posted Oct. 20, 2026. The requirement starts in early 2027. The performance figures in the post are the company's claims.
- ConfirmedGoogle said advertisers in the United States and Canada will have to prove a regulator authorized them before they can run financial ads, beginning in early 2027.
- Partially confirmedGoogle's figures on how many ads it already blocks are the company's claims.
In the United States, Google said it is working with the American Bankers Association to check banks against that group's registry. Google said Tuesday that, starting in early 2027, a company will have to prove a regulator licensed it before it can run a financial ad to people in the United States or Canada.1
The post says, “Advertisers must now prove they are authorized by regulators before they can run financial ads,” and “You can expect this rollout to begin in early 2027.” It says the same program is coming to Canada, with the Canadian Bankers Association. Google also says that in 2025 its systems, using Gemini, caught over 99 percent of policy-violating ads before they were shown, and that more than 97 percent of ads people see already come from advertisers whose identity was checked. Those two rates are the company's claims.1
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. Fake bank and investment ads are a common way people are pulled into a scam. A license check would make that harder on Google, but not until early 2027, and only for the advertisers Google decides must show the paperwork.1
The change is a rule of Google's ad system. It is not a statute. Enforcement has not started.
