Confirmed. The Federal Trade Commission said on October 27, 2026, that PlayPower abandoned its proposed acquisition of BCI Burke. The director's claim that prices will fall is his statement, not a measured price.
- ConfirmedThe Bureau of Competition said PlayPower dropped the deal after the commission and a dozen states sued last week.
- ConfirmedDirector Daniel Guarnera said the abandonment will help drive down playground prices. The statement does not report a new price.
PlayPower has abandoned its plan to buy rival playground maker BCI Burke, a week after the Federal Trade Commission and a dozen states sued to stop the deal. The commission announced the news on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.1
Daniel Guarnera, director of the Bureau of Competition, said dropping the merger “will help drive down the prices that schools, churches, daycares and parks departments pay for playgrounds.” That drop is his statement. The commission has not printed a new price.1
The buyers here are not households. State and municipal governments spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on commercial outdoor playground equipment, Guarnera said, and tens of millions of children and their families use the playgrounds.1
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. A dropped deal leaves two sellers competing. It does not, by itself, change the number on a catalog. The commission’s statement argues that continued competition will lower prices, but those prices are set by negotiations between manufacturers and institutional buyers spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year, not by individual families.
Five manufacturers, including PlayPower and Burke, control 85 to 90 percent of the market for this equipment. The deal would have cut the number of major competitors from five to four and given PlayPower’s owners, Platinum Equity, control of more than 30 percent of the market.1

He said: "PlayPower's decision to abandon its proposed acquisition of Burke in the face of the FTC's enforcement action is a win for American consumers and will help drive down the prices that schools, churches, daycares and parks departments pay for playgrounds." He said state and municipal governments "spend hundreds of millions of dollars on playground equipment every year," and that "tens of millions of children and their families" will benefit. He said the top five manufacturers, including PlayPower and Burke, "control 85%–90% of the market for commercial outdoor playground equipment," that the deal would have cut the number of major competitors from five to four, and that it would have given PlayPower's owners "control over more than 30% of the relevant market." This desk did not open the complaint.
What is still unknown or disputed
- The day the complaint was filed. The statement says "last week" and this desk did not open the complaint.
- Whether any playground price has changed since the deal was dropped. Not in the statement.
