The FAA said it issued a first-of-its-kind for the ALIA A250.
  • Confirmed
The certificate authorizes market-survey flights with operators and participants. It is not authority to carry paying passengers.
The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday gave BETA Technologies a new certificate for its battery-powered ALIA A250, an aircraft that takes off and lands straight up. The certificate lets the company fly with operators so they can see whether the aircraft fits their work. It is not permission to carry paying passengers.1
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the certificate in Las Vegas. The FAA said that the ALIA A250 “is now authorized to conduct flight operations with operators and participants for the purpose of conducting market surveys,” and that the certificate also expands where those flights can go. Administrator Bryan Bedford's line about “rigorous safety standards” is the agency's.1
BETA chief executive Kyle Clark's account of a first crewed vertical-takeoff transition flight in 2024, and of being first to receive this kind of authorization for a vertical-takeoff model, is the company's. This story does not treat those claims as an FAA finding.1
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. A company can now put prospective customers in the aircraft, or fly it for them, to test whether they would use it. A passenger who buys a ticket is a different step, and the FAA did not take that step on Wednesday.
The certificate announced in Las Vegas is a , and the FAA's release says it is not authority to carry paying passengers.
