State counts show Democrats ahead in six Republican-held Senate seats

The File desk · Nov. 4, 2026, 8:35 a.m. ET

Status

Partially confirmed. Official election-night counts from 10 states, opened by this desk between 8:18 and 8:25 a.m. ET on November 4, 2026, list the Senate totals below. None of those counts is certified. The Associated Press projected that Democrats won both chambers of Congress. This desk has not confirmed that from official results: the state counts it opened do not reach 51 Senate seats or 218 House seats.
  • Partially confirmed
The Senate vote totals are the figures printed on the official state pages this desk opened. None is certified.
  • Estimate
The seat arithmetic combines those counts with the Senate's current roster and class list.
  • Unverified
AP projected Democratic control of the House and Senate. The official counts this desk opened do not reach 51 Senate seats or 218 House seats, so chamber control is not confirmed here.
Democrats lead in six U.S. Senate races for seats Republicans now hold, according to official state counts this desk opened Wednesday morning, November 4, 2026. Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas each show the Democratic candidate ahead. None of those counts is certified.12345611
The Associated Press projected that Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate. Its story was headlined "Democrats win US House and Senate, taking full control of Congress." That is a news organization's projection. This desk has not confirmed it from official results.14
The Senate has 100 seats, so a party needs 51 to hold a majority on its own. The Senate's current roster lists 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and 2 independents. Thirty-five seats were on the ballot: 13 held by Democrats and 22 held by Republicans. That leaves 32 Democrats, 31 Republicans and the 2 independents in seats that were not up this year.1112
Iowa's count lists Josh Turek, a Democrat, with 683,429 votes and Ashley Hinson, a Republican, with 628,799. Kansas lists Adam Hamilton, a Democrat, with 556,414 and Roger Marshall, a Republican, with 503,230, with 4,168 of 4,168 precincts reporting.12
North Carolina lists Roy Cooper, a Democrat, with 2,467,963 votes and Michael Whatley, a Republican, with 1,643,088, with 2,626 of 2,626 precincts reporting. Ohio lists Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, with 2,301,042 and Jon Husted, a Republican, with 2,077,748.34
South Carolina's file labeled 12:00 a.m. lists Annie Andrews, a Democrat, with 1,034,418 votes and Darline Graham, a Republican, with 948,133. Texas lists James Talarico, a Democrat, with 5,360,196 and Ken Paxton, a Republican, with 4,166,380, with 253 of 254 counties reporting.56
In four seats Democrats now hold, the state counts show the Democrat ahead. Georgia lists Jon Ossoff with 2,463,132 votes and Mike Collins with 1,711,322. Virginia lists Mark R. Warner with 2,175,916 and Bert Mizusawa with 1,384,612. New Mexico lists Ben R. Luján with 455,165 and Larry E. Marker with 265,557. Oregon lists Jeff Merkley with 864,411 and David Brock Smith with 619,239.78910
Here is what that arithmetic shows. Thirty-two Democrats were not on the ballot. Add the 10 races in this desk's official counts where a Democrat leads, and the total is 42. That is short of 51. Nine other seats Democrats hold were also on the ballot, and this desk did not open an official count for any of them. So the official pages this desk read do not yet show a Senate majority.11
For the House, the clerk's page lists the current chamber: 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, 1 independent and 2 vacancies. All 435 seats were on the ballot. This desk did not compile an official count for each district, so it cannot say from official results which party will hold a majority of 218.13
These totals are unofficial. A canvass is the later check of the tally, when officials add ballots the law still allows and reconcile the books. Certification is the later official act that makes a result final. Ohio's results page says the official canvass is completed about three weeks after the election. Kansas says its State Board of Canvassers will certify on December 1, 2026.24
A news organization's call is a projection, made before the count is final. It is not a state's certification. A state makes a winner official only when it certifies the count.14
The says the terms of senators and representatives end at noon on the 3d day of January, and the terms of their successors then begin. The next such date after this election is January 3, 2027.15
Why it matters (Estimate). Estimate. If the six leads in Republican-held seats hold, and Democrats keep all 13 seats they defended, Democrats would have 51 seats without counting the independents. This desk opened official counts for only four of those 13. Readers should treat chamber control as AP's projection until the states certify.
Kansas says provisional ballots will be counted during the county canvass, no later than November 16, 2026. Its secretary of state says that, because of a court injunction, advance mail ballots postmarked by November 3 and received by county election offices by November 6 can be counted, so the unofficial totals may rise through November 6.216

What is still unknown or disputed

  • Official statewide Senate counts for the nine Democratic-held seats this desk did not open: Michigan (page timed out), Minnesota (bot block), New Hampshire, New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, Massachusetts, Delaware and Rhode Island (no 2026 general count found or page failed).
  • Maine's statewide Senate count. Maine's secretary of state posted only overseas and military ballot results; Susan Collins holds the seat now.
  • Mississippi, Florida and Alaska official counts. Those pages failed or listed no general-election count.
  • An official count for each of the 435 House districts.
  • Whether the two independents will side with either party. The Senate's party-division page does not say for the 119th Congress.
  • Time zones on Texas's update time (Nov 04, 2026 13:08:39) and Kansas's (11/04/2026 12:58 AM). The pages do not name one on those stamps.
  • What Iowa's PR 94 and TP 99 fields mean. The file does not define them.
  • Oregon's page shows 0 out of 1318 precincts reported beside its vote totals. The page does not explain it.
  • The Kansas results page ends with the line "ELECTION RESULTS ARE NOW OFFICIAL," while the same page says results stay unofficial until certification on December 1, 2026.
  • Whether late, provisional or overseas ballots change who is ahead in any race.
