Status

Confirmed. Congo's figures are the Congolese public health institute's situation reports No. 156 and No. 157 (data through Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, both published Oct. 18-19), translated from French by this desk. The U.S. ratings are the CDC's travel health notice for Kenya and the State Department's Kenya travel advisory, both dated Oct. 19. Kenya's count is the Ministry of Health's update of Oct. 18.
  • Confirmed
Congo confirmed 97 new Ebola cases on Saturday, Oct. 18, in North Kivu, Ituri and Haut-Uélé provinces, up from 40 the day before (situation reports No. 156 and No. 157).
  • Confirmed
Since the outbreak began in May, Congo has recorded 9,552 confirmed cases and 4,602 deaths, with data through Oct. 18 (situation report No. 157).
  • Confirmed
On Oct. 19 the CDC posted a Level 1 travel health notice for Kenya, "Practice Usual Precautions" (CDC).
  • Confirmed
The State Department's Kenya advisory, issued Oct. 19, is at Level 3, "Reconsider travel," and lists health alongside crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and traffic safety (State Department).
  • Confirmed
Kenya's count stood at eight confirmed cases, including one death, in the Ministry of Health's latest update, on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Congo confirmed 97 new Ebola cases on Saturday, more than twice the number from the day before, its national public health institute said.1 In Kenya, where the virus arrived with one traveler this month, the count stood at eight in the health ministry's latest update, on Sunday.2 Now U.S. agencies have weighed in: the CDC advises travelers to Kenya to take usual precautions, while the State Department rates the country at Level 3 for a mix of reasons, health among them.34
Most of Saturday's new cases came from North Kivu and Ituri, the two eastern provinces hit hardest. Thirty of the newly confirmed patients died in their communities, outside treatment centers, the institute said. No new health district was affected.1
Since the outbreak began in May, Congo has counted 9,552 confirmed cases and 4,602 deaths, with data through Oct. 18.1
The CDC's notice for Kenya is its lowest level. It tells travelers to avoid contact with sick people and their body fluids, and to isolate themselves and call for medical advice if they develop a fever or other symptoms.3
The State Department's advisory, issued the same day, puts Kenya at Level 3, "Reconsider travel." It cites crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and traffic safety as well as health, and it points travelers to the CDC notice.4
Why it matters (Estimate). A single day's count can swing, but Saturday's jump came with a higher share of positive tests than Friday's, a sign the outbreak in eastern Congo is not slowing.5 For Americans, the U.S. health agency's advice for Kenya is its lowest level: usual precautions. The State Department's broader Level 3 rating rests on several risks, not on Ebola alone.
Kenya's Ministry of Health has said the risk to the general public is low, because there is no sign the virus is spreading in the community.2 On Monday the ministry received Ebola supplies from India, including 6,000 protective suits and 60 powered air-purifying respirators.6
