August spending jumped; PCE prices up 3.4% from a year earlier

The same morning, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said personal income rose $66.6 billion, or 0.2 percent, in August. After-tax income rose 0.3 percent. Consumer spending rose $190.8 billion, or 0.9 percent. The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.3 percent from July and 3.4 percent from a year earlier. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.2 percent from July and 3.0 percent from a year earlier. The personal saving rate was 4.1 percent. The next release, for September, is Oct. 29.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis posted Personal Income and Outlays for August 2026 on the same morning as the gross domestic product third estimate, Sept. 30, 2026.

Personal income rose $66.6 billion, or 0.2 percent, in August.

After-tax income rose 0.3 percent.

Consumer spending rose $190.8 billion, or 0.9 percent.

The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.3 percent from July.

From a year earlier, that price index rose 3.4 percent.

Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.2 percent from July and 3.0 percent from a year earlier.

The personal saving rate was 4.1 percent.

The next release is Oct. 29, for September.

No new Consumer Price Index printed. The seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index series, CPIAUCSL, still ends at August 2026 at 334.131.
