Anthropic pledges 5 percent of its shares to the public

Status
Confirmed that Anthropic posted the plan on Sunday. Every share figure is a company claim. Stockholders have not approved it. Anthropic gave no dollar value, and this story does not invent one.
- ConfirmedAnthropic said Sunday that, subject to stockholder approval, 5 percent of its shares will be committed to a new Public Benefit Fund.
- ConfirmedThe extra slices, the "roughly 20 percent" figure, and the earlier $200 million jobs pledge are Anthropic's own claims.
- ConfirmedNo dollar value for the 5 percent was stated. None is computed here.
Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI models, said Sunday it will put 5 percent of its shares into a new fund meant only for the public good. Stockholders still have to approve it, and the company named no dollar figure.1
The post says an extra 2 percent can be added, at the board's discretion, each time the company's value climbs 50 percent above a baseline Anthropic has not named. The fund is a company the firm owns, not a charity, so it can give in more than one way. Anthropic names large gifts to nonprofits, or money sent straight to particular groups of people, as examples.2
One use it names is jobs. Anthropic says it has already committed $200 million to studying how AI changes work, and that "bolder approaches may be needed." It also says none of the fund's Anthropic shares will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the United States or abroad.3
Counting older promises, Anthropic says roughly 20 percent of its shares are now dedicated to the public good, a mix that includes a pledge by the co-founders to donate 80 percent of their own equity and an employee match that about half the staff use. Those are promises, not checks already cashed, and the company says it will publish the rules, and who runs the fund, in the coming months.
Why it matters (Estimate). If AI puts people out of work, one of the companies building it is promising that a slice of its ownership could come back to the public, including as money for the people affected, not only as studies about them. That is a promise, not a payout. Stockholders still have to approve it, the rules for spending the money are not written, and Anthropic has not said what the shares are worth. The governance details it says are coming will show who controls the money and who can get it.
The post went up Sunday, and the company's account on X carried the "roughly 20 percent" line at 2:07 p.m. ET.
Notes
- 1.Anthropic, "Investing in the public benefit," Oct. 18, 2026. "Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares will be committed today, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline." All figures in this story are the company's. https://www.anthropic.com/news/public-benefit-fund
- 2.Same post. The fund is "a wholly-owned LLC—rather than a 501(c)(3)." "As a public benefit corporation, most of our work in pursuit of our mission takes place inside the company." A public benefit corporation is a for-profit company whose charter also names a public mission. That description is Anthropic's, not a statute this desk opened.
- 3.Same post. "Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing this issue." "None of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad." "When combined with today's announcement, roughly 20% of Anthropic shares will be dedicated to the public good." The company's X post at 2:07 p.m. ET Sunday repeats the 20 percent line. The extra 2 percent steps are optional. https://x.com/AnthropicAI/status/2111881963657412903
