Anthropic publishes metrics on how fast frontier AI is advancing

Anthropic posted three internal measurements on Sept. 17 that it says the public needs to track how fast frontier labs are moving. As of August 2026, the company says Claude “leads” 26 percent of its artificial-intelligence research and development work on an Epoch AI automation scale and is not fully autonomous on any measured subset. About 30,000 internal agents were active on its most-used platform at any one time. In a mid-July compute snapshot, about 6 percent of AI-research compute went to safety, and about 12 percent of compute that went to AI-driven AI research went to safety. The post argues labs should publish comparable numbers so outsiders can see the pace.
