Confirmed (Anthropic science post + preprint, Sept. 23, 2026)
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, Anthropic published early results from a new Bay Area life-sciences lab. Claude agents scanned about 1.9 billion protein clusters and flagged array-associated reverse transcriptases — called ART — in bacteriophages: a reverse transcriptase, a partner gene, and a long DNA repeat array that looks like CRISPR. The company does not yet know what ART does. A company preprint says the agents have not shown that the reverse transcriptase is active or that the unit RNAs are its substrates. This is a science result, not a new frontier-model launch.

Claude agents scanned about 1.9 billion protein clusters and flagged array-associated reverse transcriptases — called ART — in bacteriophages.
The unit is a reverse transcriptase, a partner gene, and a long DNA repeat array that looks like CRISPR.
The company post says the search took 21 hours, with roughly 950 agents using 210 million tokens.
Anthropic says it does not yet know what ART does.
A company preprint, Autonomous AI agents discover reverse transcriptases with tandem repeat arrays, says the agents have not shown that the reverse transcriptase is active or that the unit RNAs are its substrates.
The same post records Feng Zhang calling the RNA-repeat finding “genuinely intriguing.”
This is a science result. It is not a new frontier-model launch.
What is still unknown or disputed
- Biological function of ART; whether the reverse transcriptase is enzymatically active; peer review; any gene-editing path.

Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Anthropic · September 23, 2026
Today, we’re sharing early results from one of our first research programs, in which Claude autonomously discovered a novel enzyme system that is associated with an array of DNA repeats, a pattern reminiscent of CRISPR. Although we don’t yet know its function… After 21 hours spent searching this data by roughly 950 agents using 210 million tokens…

Autonomous AI agents discover reverse transcriptases with tandem repeat arrays
Anthropic · September 23, 2026
We deployed Claude Code instances to survey reverse transcriptase (RT) loci across 1.9 billion protein clusters. Among the top candidates were array-associated RTs (ART)… we have not shown that the RT is active or that the unit RNAs are its substrates.
